If you have watched other Kyoto Animation shows, You expect deep drama. Plot wise there is nothing really going on here. The more casual viewer will enjoy the English dub. If you have a more than passing understanding of Japanese tradition and culture, the subtitled version is great. Although I am not a English dub fan at all, this one works both ways. It’s the same voices you hear in many other dubs. Some of the jokes in Japanese make little sense to an average Westerner, the English dub tries to correct that but sometimes falls flat.

Also it must have been fun to do this after their previous series full of heartbreak, tension, and drama. Regardless, the animation style does fit the type of series Lucky Star is. Personally, I don’t like the animation style, but considering what many top rated American cartoon shows look like today, this could be considered high art. Some will enjoy this limited animation style but others will find it too simple or disregard it as a time slot filler like you would find on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon where audience figures are always drastically low.
The animation is simple and cartoony, not anything like Kyoto Animation’s normal “every frame matters” quality. There is no easy answer, so I will just write a review. So why would I buy it and give it five stars? I enjoyed the series years ago, but I normally wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it. (incl.I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Lucky Star.
